The Princess and the Pony
Princess Pinecone wants to be a great warrior. For her birthday, she asks for a great horse fit for a champion. What she gets is a small, round pony. Things don't look good for the upcoming battle (a warrior's favourite pastime) but Pinecone is set on achieving her dreams, and there might be something of a champion in the doughy little pony after all.

Reviews:
"Beaton blurs the boundaries of traditional storytelling, marrying fantasy elements to pop culture with a free-associative swagger. This emerging genre, with its zinelike irreverence and joyful comedy, is hip, modern, and absolutely refreshing."
-Kirkus
"A smart, brisk story that tosses aside conventional ideas of what princesses (and ponies) are “supposed” to be. "
- Publisher's Weekly
"A highly recommended, charmingly illustrated tale of teamwork and tenderness."
- School Library Journal
"The perfect combination of heartwarming and hilarious."
- Booklist
"There are many ways to express how stupendous this book is (a star, two hooves up, 5/5 pony farts) ..."
- Quill and Quire
"Kate Beaton gently subverts the idea that ‘strong female heroes’ have to kick a** – and provides a lesson for adults too."
- The Guardian
Kate has other books available from Drawn and Quarterly, they are fun comic collections, but they're definitely for a grown up audience.
